Strangers in the Night

57F/sun/calm/ We had some excitement on the place last night and this morning. About 9:30 last night someone saw a small black dog running along the highway near our place and was afraid it might get hit. They tried to catch it, but it ran across the field toward our house.
They knocked on our door but HeHimself was upstairs listening to the ballgame and I had my earbuds in listening to an audiobook. The dog ran into our back pasture and the people shut the gate hoping to be able to catch him that way but no luck.
Finally both of us became aware of the commotion and went to investigate. By this time the local dog shelter lady was involved. She decided to leave the dog in the pasture and come back in the morning to get the dog. This was a smallish dog so we could see that it could easily get out through the gate bars. Anyway the lady left.
This morning HeHimself saw the dog still here. The lady did not come back until after 9:30 by which time the dog was long gone. Some others came hoping to help her, but doggy was nowhere to be found. Wish I had a happy ending to tell. We may never know. Anyway, that is the most folks on our place in over a year what with The Pestilence. Saying a doggy prayer and hoping for the best.
