Where did your family come from? 

How did they get to where they are now? 

Today's family birthday is Great Grandpa Mathias Becker. He was born in Peterswald Germany in 1836. After his father and grandfather were killed in a carriage accident he, his mom, and siblings came to the US in the early 1850s, first to OH and then to MI. A proud Civil War veteran, he never did totally recover from injuries he sustained at the first Battle at Bull Run, but nonetheless was a successful business man with several enterprises in Grand Rapids, Ionia, and Saginaw including his main trade as a cooper. I love his name since Mathias was the 13th disciple, chosen after the death of Judas.
